Of the 5
islands, Molokai is the least populated. The
locals there are quite adamant about keeping Molokai the
way it is, which is beautiful land untouched by
commercialism. There has been talk about a cruise
ship porting there, but the locals strong opposition put
a stop to that. Molokai's biggest town,
Kaunakakai, has one gas station, and no traffic lights.
The Molokai airport has two car rental
agencies, and they usually have a limited supply of
cars. If you plan on visiting, make sure that you
have a reservation for a rental car. Unless you
know someone on Molokai to pick you up from the airport,
you will be walking a long way to the nearest town.
There are so few cars driving around, hitch hiking is
probably not a good option.
I spent time on two beaches, Papohaku beach, and
Halawa Bay. Both are practically deserted, and
very beautiful. They are on opposite sides of the
island. It is definitely worth your while to visit
both places.
I flew Aloha Airlines over to Molokai.
They have 2 or 3 flights a day over there. It cost
be around $130 roundtrip from Oahu to Molokai on a
propeller plane.
