Kolekole Park

Kole Kole Park

On my way up to Honokaa, I made a stop here at this beach at KoleKole Park.  There was no body here except for a few surfer's, some kids wading in the shallow pools, and a few playful whales in the ocean.

Kole Kole surfers

Waves here are ideal for surfing, so much so that the skilled surfers risk getting smashed up against the rocks.  They will ride the wave in as long as they can, and right before the wave crashes against the rocks, they cut back over the wave in order to not get thrown into the rocks.  It was pretty impressive.

Hump Back Whale

Here you can see a whale in the ocean. They swim down from Alaska to mate in the warm waters of Hawaii in February and March.  By the end of March, they are getting ready to migrate back up to Alaska.  What is happening here is that the mother whale is teaching her young offspring how to smack their fins against the water in order to prepare them for their long journey home.
