Kaimu

Kaimu is a city which was destroyed by a lava flow 10 years ago.  Where I am now standing, once a city, now is covered with 15 feet of lava. 

   The lava flow that covered Kaimu extended a quarter mile into the ocean, and created this new black sand beach.  Black sand is created when molten hot lava meets cool ocean water, and explodes to form little crystals, which is what black sand is.  Pictured here are young palm trees that were recently planted.
